The two primary conditions associated with primary mathematics learning disabilities (MLD) are underachievement in math that may be related to deficits due to other verbal learning dis- abilities, and/or dyscalculia.
Identification of children and youth with MLD is complicated for several reasons.
For one, lower than unexpected mathematics achievement in and of itself does not verify the presence of MLD.
By contrast, students who have persistent low scores across assessment periods and who also have memory or cognitive deficits are likely candidates for MLD (Geary, 2004).
Another complication in the identi- fication of MLD is overlap in symptoms with nonverbal learning disability, or right hemisphere disability, wherein the primary academic impairment is evident in an inability to perform in mathematics (Rourke, 1985, 1989; Rourke & Conway, 1997).
